The award recognizes employers who have created effective workplaces based on six components:
- work-life fit
- supervisor support for work success
- satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement
- opportunities for learning
- a culture of trust
All are factors associated with employee health, well-being and engagement. The award is unique for its rigorous, two-step selection process, which involves an evaluation of employers’ flexibility programs and practices, and a confidential employee survey on the key ingredients of an effective and flexible workplace. Two-thirds of the score is determined by the results of the employee survey. Unlike some award programs, there is no fee required of firms to participate/be selected.
Below are some of the comments shared by leaders and staff who place great value on our culture of flexibility.
Flexibility in the workplace has allowed me to adapt my schedule based on the season of life I am in. It has taken the form of extended absences due to illnesses in my family during busy season, working at home in the evening after little ones are put to bed, and has provided options that have allowed me to set my own pace and professional goals. Flexibility has also meant support from the firm’s leadership in recognizing that these “life decisions” are followed through with a genuine commitment to make it become a win-win situation.
Becky Hughes, recently promoted to Director (owner)
I have been blessed with the opportunity to raise my children in an environment where I could work enough to maintain a career, as well as be home with them as much as possible. Over the years those commitments have definitely existed in an ebb and flow as the firm’s flexibility has changed with my own. I have also been blessed to have a husband who was willing to give me the opportunity to be flexible with family and work. A CPA is a wonderful career path for a mother—especially a CPA with a concentration in tax. During tax season you are needed. It’s as great a benefit to the firm as it is to the employee. Both sacrifice but both receive rewards.

When my husband and I decided to start our family, DMLO was the perfect answer to my need for a flex schedule. When my son was a child, I worked only during the school year. As he’s gotten older, I’ve been able to increase and decrease my number of hours worked as needed. The directors I have worked for have always been accepting and open to the flexibility I needed. I have never felt that my schedule was a hindrance to them.

When I applied to an ad for a part-time job at DMLO ten years ago, I had no idea what a wonderful opportunity awaited me and my family. The flexibility provided by DMLO has allowed me to raise my two young daughters while still being able to advance in my career.

My parents experienced significant health issues this past year; as primary caregiver, the disruptions to my daily plans and schedule have been frequent and overwhelming. Were I not so fortunate to work at a firm that embraces flexibility, it would have been impossible to provide the care my family needed. The freedom and support to work when and where I can is priceless, and a key factor in my success. I feel valued, trusted, and respected, and that provides incredible motivation to give my best each day!
